MessageWear (MW) 2019 was a follow-up project based in the collaboration between Shokkin Group and Tallinn Youth centres (Kesklinna, Lasnamäe, Põhja-Tallinn, Mustamäe and Kristiine). Every partner organisation created a small MW team consisting of a youth leader and youngsters. During the project we managed to make cooperation between youth from different districts of our city, having different social and cultural backgrounds and aged between 14-26 y.o.

Various meetings, workshops and brainstormig sessions helped us to implement our ideas. None of us was a professional artist or a designer before, which made our project challenging and interesting at the same time. After figuring out topics and criterias for our designs, we carried out free open workshops for youth in different places.

During the project we learned at least three different ways of implementing ideas on clothes (T-shirts, hoodies) and bags: textil painting, screen printing, digitilizing sketches in Adobe and using printing company. As a final step, we made selection among sketches of our participants and picked the ones to print that you can see in the brochure.

“The project gave local youth opportunities to express their creativity in various ways.  We implemented our ideas, discussed social topics, tried different techniques. But one of the best things I appreciate about MessageWear 2019 is that we managed to develop a local community of young leaders who cooperated with each other to achieve common goal.
We created a space where we expressed our thoughts and ideas, communicating in three different languages. Lots of open workshops made this project accessible for youth who were interested in the topic of design. MessageWear became a great platform for experimenting with youth ideas realisation through design.”
