“Attending the ‘Transforming Narratives’ seminar on Utøya (Norway) was an unforgettable experience. The island itself carries a heavy history, and arriving there was not easy emotionally. At the same time, it is a place of resilience and beauty, and the organisers created a safe and supportive space for us to work together.

The program was structured yet deeply personal. Among the many activities, the kintsugi-inspired exercise stood out most strongly for me. By drawing my pain in black and letting others add colors without knowing my story, I could see my past transformed. This process helped me let go and reframe how I view difficult moments. Other activities, such as mapping our emotions on the island, wearing masks to reflect on inner and outer identities, and writing daily letters of reflection, deepened the experience.
Through these days I strengthened important skills: resilience, empathy, storytelling, and collective reflection. Most importantly, I took a step I had not dared before: I began to speak openly about my own pain.

Leaving Utøya, I felt sadness because of parting with wonderful people and such an intense atmosphere of trust. Still, I carry forward the lesson that stories can heal, connect us, and empower democratic values. I would recommend this program to those who have experienced pain and to anyone who wishes to understand democracy in a more human and transformative way.”
